It baffles me that an iPhone costs as much as a MacBook Pro.

Does Apple make a much greater margin selling iPhone?
What is so hard to understand? An iPhone Pro has a camera system approaching equivalent to thousand dollar standalone cameras; Mac laptops have no such camera system. iPhone pros cram a huge amount of tech competence into a very small device, and engineering and building all that miniaturization I am sure is expensive.

And don’t forget the required cellular radios and antennas, GPS, FaceID, and wireless charging.

It is apples and oranges.

It is difficult these days to tease apart exact margins for the different products. It is easy to determine, quarter over quarter, what the margin for all iPhones of all types must have been via information that is certified to be true under severe legal penalty. Same for all Macs, plus things like monitors which mostly seem to be included in the Mac number. But Apple (and most modern electronics manufacturers) don’t want to allow much greater insight than this, in theory to allow them to adjust as necessary without market penalty. From this information, yes, the margin for iPhones is (still) greater than the margin for Macs. But that is not a super satisfying answer. And don’t forget the general category if services . . . the services revenue predicted for each sku can dramatically change how one looks at profitability and margin.

Who buys 512GB SSD ??
I did. My 14-inch M4 Pro MacBook Pro has 24GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. But that’s because it’s not my main Mac computer. My M2 Max Mac Studio with 64GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD is.
