Apple Says These 7 U.S. States Plan to Offer iPhone Driver's Licenses

In select U.S. states, residents can add their driver's license or state ID to the Apple Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch, and then use it to display proof of identity or age at select airports and businesses, and in select apps.

The feature is currently available in 13 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, and it is expected to launch in at least seven more in the future.

To set up the feature, open the Wallet app and tap on the plus sign in the top-right corner. Next, select Driver's License and ID Cards and follow the steps.

Supported States

The following 13 states offer driver's licenses in the Wallet app:

The feature is also available in Puerto Rico.

Future States

Apple and local DMV offices have announced that the following U.S. states have signed on to adopt the feature, but no timeframes were disclosed:

  • Connecticut
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • Oklahoma
  • Utah
  • Arkansas
  • Virginia

Participating Airports

Apple Wallet IDs are accepted at TSA checkpoints in more than 250 airports in the U.S., for domestic travel. Given that Apple Wallet IDs are not accepted by law enforcement, and lack many other use cases, carrying a physical ID is still necessary.

  • Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL)
  • Des Moines International Airport (DSM)
  • Eastern Iowa Airport (CID)
  • Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ)
  • Lea County Regional Airport (HOB)
  • Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU)

Travelers should refer to TSA signage to confirm availability of the feature.

Digital Passport

If you live in a state that does not yet offer Apple Wallet IDs, you can now create a Digital ID based on your U.S. passport, and present it at the same participating TSA checkpoints, for age and identity verification purposes during domestic travel. It is not a replacement for a physical passport, and it cannot be used for international travel.

This feature requires iOS 26.1 or watchOS 26.1 and later.

I don't think you understand how it could be abused by L.E.
Whatever you say. You aren't handing your phone over to anyone and the phone won't be unlocked. It will work the same way Apple pay does, officer will have a "reader". Literally do five seconds of research on this.

We get it, you don't like or trust the police. Have a good one!

I thought this but when I locked my phone and tried to pull up Wallet by double-tapping the power button, it required Face ID / unlock (because this is the same way you pay via Apple Pay, for example). How can I bring up my Apple Wallet digital state ID while keeping the phone locked?
That’s only unlocking whatever card is displayed in Apple Pay/Wallet, it isn’t unlocking your phone. If you try to swipe up to go Home at that point, you’ll see it requests Face ID again to unlock.

i.e. using Face ID in Apple Pay doesn’t unlock your phone.

The article is incorrect, it is accepted by law enforcement in some states, and will likely be accepted by law enforcement in more states as more people register their digital ID. However, as has been said a million times before on here, at no time does one had a law enforcement officer one’s device locked or otherwise to use the system. They have NFC readers that get tapped just like ApplePay.
FWIW - In Georgia, HB296 ('https://legiscan.com/GA/bill/HB296/2025') last year mandated that LEO's accept mDL during traffic stops if they have a reader, and mandated that all LEOs shall get readers by July 1, 2027. It also changed the prior law requiring carrying one's physical license, allowing just the mDL.

And for the nervous nellies, the law prohibits compelling someone to release their phone to the LEO, and specifies that use of mDL does not constitute consent to search the phone. It also specifies that someone with an mDL can still preset their physical DL to an LEO if they prefer.

And if still nervous, when you see the blue lights behind you, just press/hold side + volume button a few seconds until power-off slider shows up. Phone will still let you use faceID for wallet access, but requires passcode to actually unlock.

Yep, that's something i really want!!! to be tracked even more than i am currently! Digital IDs' are for one thing and one thing only, NOT for convenience, NOT for trust AND definitely NOT FOR SECURITY!!!

After spending the last 30+ year in information security (recently retired) there are a few things i am sure of: governments are no longer in control of our info, corporations are and while i have little trust in governments, especially these days, i am 100% sure that any info held by corps on me is for sale!

Digital IDs are for tracking you and controlling you! If you are seriously thinking of getting one of these take a moment and just google "pros and cons to digital IDs" for the facts and then "why are digital IDs a bad idea" for more opinions.

The last thing i would ask is, why are every technology savvy person (who are worth their salt) not going to get one?

BTW just in case you were wondering, the "RealID"s are not a digital ID, what they are, is a federally recognized ID not just a state ID. That is basically it!
If you are this paranoid why even have a state ID in the first place? You realize this is just a digital copy of information they already have on you? Your picture, your home address, your general description, hell you're even assigned a number!

And then this goes onto a device which is operated by a cartel of telecom networks who have public and secret ties to the government intelligence and law enforcement organizations. Who have a record of every call you ever made, every text you ever sent, every cell tower your phone has ever seen.

If this is information you have serious concerns about tying together, you should already be using two phones and a lot of other security precautions anyway. Not that it helps much because the phones themselves are tracking devices with many sensitive sensors.

At this point the main con is that it's basically useless. We already have FLOCK cameras and Ring doorbells and every app with push notification access keeping tabs on us at all times. This is the least of our concerns with the surveillance state.

I've tried using the digital passport at two different airports and it failed every time, even when the TSA agent let me try several times. The agent at one station said that it's only working for about 50% of people
I used two weeks ago at LAX T4 without issue and again at JFK a few days ago. Zero issues and super fast. We're getting there!

Edit to add: It's 100% contactless, the phone never leaves your hand. Ya know.. just like ApplePay ;)
