Apple Music Radio Stations Now Available via TuneIn

Apple Music's six radio stations will be available outside the ‌Apple Music‌ app for the first time via TuneIn, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Starting today, ‌Apple Music‌ 1, ‌Apple Music‌ Hits, ‌Apple Music‌ Country, Apple Música Uno, ‌Apple Music‌ Club, and ‌Apple Music‌ Chill will be available to TuneIn's 75 million monthly active users. The stations continue to feature no commercials. A link inside the TuneIn app and on its website directs users to ‌Apple Music‌.

TuneIn is a cross-platform internet-based radio service that lets users stream live radio stations, music channels, news, sports, and podcasts from around the world through a single app or its website. Apple reportedly approached TuneIn about the partnership toward the end of last year.

In an effort to combat Spotify, Apple apparently aims to convert ‌Apple Music‌ radio listeners into paying subscribers. Unlike Spotify, ‌Apple Music‌ has no ad-supported function, leaving it with few methods to entice users beyond free trials.

‌Apple Music‌'s share of digital music subscribers in the United States reportedly fell from 30% in 2020 to 25% at the end of 2024. Meanwhile, Spotify's share increased from 31% to 37% over the same period. ‌Apple Music‌'s global marketshare has fallen from 16% to 12%.

Back in 2019, TuneIn announced a collaboration with Apple to bring TuneIn's more than 100,000 global radio stations to ‌Apple Music‌.

As an international Apple Music listener the concentration of heavy African American rap music is very disappointing. Apple could raise its market share if it made its radio station more globally focused. Apple Music Club plays a good mix of electronic music from around the world but Hits and 1 are far too US centric.

Apple needs to diversify offering K-Pop, J-Pop, Chinese Pop, European pop etc. there are plenty of worthy musicians from around the world besides the heavy black American musicians which seem to be the current focus.

Plenty of options for other English language musicians from other English speaking nations around the world as well.

Apple Music 1 is littered with swear words and songs about having sex and fighting with people. It’s not a good station to put on with my young family in the car. This is irrelevant to most people over 15 years old.

Agreed! I can’t listen to Apple Music 1 because it’s just too US radio and whatever focused. They seem to forget about other genres and the rest of the world. Hits is also similar - way too narrow.

Too bad Tune-In is barely functional. Constant ads have ruined a good platform. I used to use it in my car, but if I made or took a call, then Tune-In restarts with two minutes of mandatory ads you can't skip to fast-forward through. Change the channel? Two more minutes of ads. Go back to the same channel a second later? Two more minutes of ads. It got to the point there were more ads than music/news. Oh, and it's THE SAME ADS. It was so bad, my kids would groan when the umpteenth Tide Pods commercial came on. Ended up subscribing to Spotify and haven't looked back.

Again, Apple doesn't know how to spell the word R-O-C-K. Oh well. Par for the course.

For now, you can't invoke TuneIn directly, but if you ask it to play a station that you know that's on it (by simply saying "Play [radio station name]" and then Siri will come back with saying "Now playing [radio station name] provided by TuneIn" and then proceed to play it
