Transcend Launches SSD With MagSafe Compatibility

Transcend today announced the launch of the ESD420, a portable SSD that includes a magnetic attachment designed to work with MagSafe iPhones.

The ESD420 can be attached to the back of a MagSafe-compatible iPhone and connected using the appropriate cable, such as a USB-C to USB-C cable. It supports ‌iPhone‌ video recording features that require an external SSD, such as 4K ProRes video recording.

Transcend designed the SSD to be compact and portable, and it weighs 48 grams. Transcend says that it offers military-grade drop resistance so that it can withstand shocks and falls, and it is meant to match the ‌iPhone‌ with gold and space gray color options available. Because there is a magnet inside, the SSD can also be attached to other magnetic surfaces for storage purposes.

The ESD420 comes in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. It supports read and write speeds of up to 2,000MB/s, and it comes formatted in the exFAT file system. More information is available on Transcend's website.

Is this an ad or what? I got real excited for a brief moment thinking that this allowed for wireless data transfer via magsafe, but then I remembered that doesn't exist, and this magnet is only for attaching the drive to the back of the phone.

Given the competition ('https://www.corsair.com/us/en/p/data-storage/cssd-ex400u1tb/ex400u-1tb-usb4-external-ssd-cssd-ex400u1tb'), it can’t be too expensive.

no price on their end meaning not taking orders yet either. will hit amazon I'm sure with a hefty $600-$800 price for the 4TB model.
Then the product is more announced than launched.

Xiaomi should donate laser link to the wireless power consortium like apple donated magsafe for qi2 and incorporate laser link into the next version of qi2/qi3. This would allow for devices like this to forgo cables and transfer high speed data directly into devices. Pogo pins could enable more than just high speed data.

Edit update - They could also enable cool thermal free 100 watt wireless magsafe battery packs. If you're at zero battery but you wanna walk in the park, gym, or city, you could snap on a 100 watt magsafe battery pack and go. No waiting by your wall charger. Zero to 80 percent in 10 minutes. Take a few with you and never need to be near a wall the whole weekend.

And to people that ask - what about cases? Cases can integrate the pogo pins and allow the data/power to be transfered via a ribbon inside the case directly up into the phones USBC port .

examples -

Looks like it will be a good SSD with an option of having MagSafe attachment. With no price mentioned, not sure whether it is currently available to purchase today.
