How Thin Is the iPhone 17 Air?

Apple's rumored iPhone 17 Air could be the company's thinnest iPhone ever, with multiple sources pointing to a remarkably slim design that could redefine smartphone portability.

The most consistent thickness estimate comes from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who believes the iPhone 17 Air will measure just 5.5mm at its thinnest point. Dummy models have surfaced that reflect the same, suggesting Apple has settled on this measurement for the device's main chassis.

Other industry sources echo similar numbers. The Information reports the device will be around 6mm thick, while analyst Jeff Pu also predicts a 6mm profile. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman estimates the iPhone 17 Air will be roughly 2mm thinner than the iPhone 16 Pro, which would put it at approximately 6.25mm.

To put these numbers in perspective, the iPhone 17 Air would easily claim the title of Apple's thinnest iPhone. The current record holder is the iPhone 6 at 6.9mm, making the iPhone 17 Air potentially 1.4mm thinner. That's quite a difference when you consider modern iPhones have grown thicker over time – the iPhone 16 Pro measures 8.25mm, for example.

Notably, Apple has recent experience with ultra-thin devices. The 2024 iPad Pro M4 measures just 5.1mm, making it Apple's thinnest product ever. If the iPhone 17 Air matches those 5.5mm rumors, it would be nearly as thin as the iPad Pro.

The camera bump will likely be thicker than the main body, with reports suggesting it could measure around 9.5mm in that area to accommodate the single 48-megapixel rear camera we're expecting. In terms of size, rumors suggest the iPhone 17 Air will have a 6.6-inch display, which will put it in between the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Pro Max in size.

The iPhone 17 Air is expected to feature a 120Hz ProMotion display, and it will be equipped with Apple's C1 5G modem. Other features will include an A19 chip, Wi-Fi 7, and a more advanced display material that can better hold up to drops and scratches.

As a replacement for the Plus model in Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 lineup. Apple plans to market the iPhone 17 Air with a focus on design rather than internal specs. It won't have the top-of-the-line components or the fastest chip like the iPhone 17 Pro models, but the fresh design may be appealing to customers. Expect to see the device launch in September, with a price point staring around $899.
