Fortnite Returns to U.S. App Store

Popular game Fortnite is once again available in the U.S. App Store, as Apple has finally approved Epic Games' app submission. This is the first time that Fortnite has been on the iOS ‌App Store‌ since 2020.

Apple initially did not plan to allow Fortnite back in the ‌App Store‌, but the judge overseeing the ongoing legal battle between the two companies yesterday suggested that Apple and ‌Epic Games‌ work things out or face more time in court. The judge threatened to require the Apple official that oversees app decisions to appear in person in court, which apparently was enough to spur Apple to allow the game back on the ‌App Store‌.

Fortnite is available from the iOS ‌App Store‌ in the United States, and from the ‌Epic Games‌ Store alternative app marketplace in the European Union. It is not available on the ‌App Store‌ in other countries. The U.S. version of Fortnite includes an option for players to purchase in-app currency using the ‌Epic Games‌ website as an alternative to in-app purchase.

Apple initially planned to prevent Fortnite from returning to the ‌App Store‌ until the legal dispute was entirely settled. As of now, Apple is appealing the court's ruling that forced it to change its U.S. ‌App Store‌ rules to allow developers to link customers to purchase options available outside of the ‌App Store‌.

Man there are gonna be some really salty Apple folks here. I’m glad it’s back. Both apple and epic looked bad here, but Apple far worse.

I'll never understand why someone would defend a company preventing you from putting an app on your phone/computer. I get it that you don't play Fortnite, but substitute any other app on your phone and imagine if Apple banned it.

If you ever think for a moment the Apple fanboys aren't out in force here, look no further than the closest article on Fortnight. It's kind of crazy how many people act like it's a good thing that a trillion dollar company gets final say over how you spend your money on a phone you already very possibly paid upwards of $1000 for.

Funny how some people were saying no one here even plays Fortnite, yet they are posting one star reviews proudly.

Gosh it's so petty, but those people learned from the best I guess

A true shame that a private company can be bullied — yes, by the legal system — into working with another company, one that remains relentlessly litigious against them.

Apple is going to have to come to terms with the fact that their App Store monopoly is quickly coming to an end. While that’s bad for Apple (obviously), it’s good for developers and consumers. Phones desperately need more competition, but the entry to the hardware market is very difficult today. Perhaps at least software will get more competitive.
