iOS 18.1 was released in October with the first Apple Intelligence features for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 models, including AI-generated notification summaries. While this feature can be useful at times, it has unfortunately led to some inaccurate summaries of news stories. In turn, Apple recently promised to address this issue.
Apple earlier this month told the BBC News that it planned to release an iOS 18 update "in the coming weeks" that will "further clarify when the text being displayed is summarization provided by Apple Intelligence." With an Apple Intelligence label, it would be clear the summaries are coming from Apple, not the news source directly.
Apple also emphasized that Apple Intelligence remains in beta, so hopefully the summaries of news stories become more accurate over time.
It is unclear exactly when the software update will be released, or which version it will end up being. It could be iOS 18.3, which is currently in beta and likely to be released in late January. A minor update such as iOS 18.2.2 or iOS 18.3.1 is also possible. Or, perhaps we will see the labels appear in the iOS 18.4 beta by early February.
iOS 18.3 is shaping up to be a minor update, with the only potential new feature being robot vacuum support in the Home app, but that functionality is not live yet. iOS 18.4 will be more interesting, as it will include several Apple Intelligence enhancements for Siri, including on-screen awareness, personal context, deeper per-app controls, and more.
