My 94 year old mom with somewhat more than moderate hearing loss has found that the new hearing aid option of the Airpods Pro 2 helps her hear things significantly better, including conversations, so when she's wearing them, we don't have to raise our voices nearly as much, if at all. And she can keep the living room TV's volume turned down to almost normal so we're not blasted out by it. I tried them on after I got them running as hearing aids for her, and I found it definitely amplifies things pretty well. We're not sure yet if it's an adequate replacement for real hearing aids, since we activated this option only in the past few days.

That said, we're seeing intermittent odd issues, like the APP2 intermittently connecting automatically to my iPhone where I performed the setup, even after I've disconnected them from the iPhone in the Settings app, so that when the iPhone plays sounds, she sometimes hears them. I can't tell my iPhone to forget them, even though I don't plan to use them with my iPhone, since this would prevent me from fine-tuning the hearing aid options. Also, the battery runtime of only about four hours is inconvenient.
I ordered a set for my mother-in-law, after showing her the new Apple ad for them. Like your mom, my mother-in-law has just enough hearing loss that it’s effecting her interacting with us, made worse by her also speaking more softly. And don’t get me started with the tv sound level - I had no idea our tv could get that loud when she’s watching the news.

I’ll be sure to help her set them up on her iPhone, not mine, so she doesn’t have any connectivity issues.

Uh, no. Mine came sealed in the original Apple box with the AirPods in the case, USB-C cable wrapped around it, no surprises, no additional deliveries. Maybe she clicked on "other sellers on Amazon" and got somebody sketchy?

I don't suppose the hearing aid support can be set up from an iPadOS 18.2 or an Android 14 device, can it?
Also, 4 hours doesn't sound great, but given how cheap they are compared to "real" hearing aids, even the over the counter ones, if one set works you could definitely just buy a second pair to keep in their box as backup and still save a lot.
I think they last up to 6 hours.
