Apple Provides Updated Look at Next-Generation CarPlay at WWDC 2024

Apple today shared a few WWDC 2024 coding sessions related to its upcoming next-generation CarPlay system ahead of its launch later this year.

The sessions include lots of updated next-generation CarPlay images, with one revealing new Vehicle, Media, and Climate apps in action for the first time. MacRumors previously discovered evidence of these apps in the iOS 17.4 beta.

Next-generation CarPlay will be highly customizable, allowing automakers to tailor the design of the system to uniquely match their vehicles. Apple revealed a variety of different design options and layouts that will be possible, as shown below.

Other images provide a closer look at the Vehicle and Climate apps, which will house vehicle settings and climate controls, respectively.

Next-generation CarPlay will allow automakers to show custom alerts related to an electric vehicle's charging status, an available software update for the vehicle, and more. In addition, it will feature rear-camera integration, as shown below.

Apple's website continues to say that the first vehicles with next-generation CarPlay will arrive in 2024, but it has yet to provide a more specific timeframe, and it did not provide any timing-related updates in the WWDC coding sessions. Aston Martin and Porsche previewed next-generation CarPlay vehicle designs late last year.

What are you smoking? I would absolutely not buy a car unless it had Apple CarPlay integration. Almost every major brand supports it. This is just the next generation. Yes, auto makers will have to take time to make it work.. but like they all did it with gen1. You still have to connect your phone to your car and your phone drives the interface.
What they mean is CarPlay 2, which takes over everything. Automakers want to monetize their infotainment systems and they can't do that with CarPlay in the way.

It’s too bad it… doesn’t exist. As in, it’s vaporware. Don’t get me wrong, I was looking forward to this so much two and a half years ago when they showed it off the first time, but how little any carmakers’ talked about it’s killed any enthusiasm. I’m still very glad they showed this off, as it at least confirms it doesn’t not exist because of/on Apple’s side. Whoever’s fault it is though, I’ve no confidence it’s coming.

By now we should have heard active confirmation on next generation cars and demos of live working versions on vehicles that would have it. Instead, there’s been radio silence, some makers that were undecided earlier, like Mercedes, vocally confirmed they won’t adopt it, and we only have two makers that seem to have any interest at all. So sad… maybe one or two cars will have it as options and thereby… become my only preferable options.

The old version isn’t going away and most carmakers, I’m confident, will have that one. The majority of people who (rightfully) say they won’t buy a car without phone mirroring (ie, current CarPlay or Android Auto) won’t know or care about this futuristic version, even if the cars inevitably become filled with screens, which seems to (have) be(en) happening anyway. I’m convinced that even makers who were bullish about being the "anti-GM” and never getting rid of CarPlay… like Ford, won’t be adopting this next generation CarPlay, and will just play dumb about it when I asked her straight up, say you know if they’re backed into a corner in terms of making a statement versus not. So until and unless carmaker starts showing it off, I’m not gonna believe that they’re going to get rid of their own operating systems, with all the subscriptions and ads that they can possibly want loaded into them, anytime soon.

Google/Android won.

I get that, but until automakers stop making absolute crap for infotainment software, the demand for CarPlay is going to force their hand. Competition for good Infotainment software is a good thing for consumers.
