More UK Bank Cards Now Show Account Balance in Apple Wallet

Apple in iOS 17.1 began allowing ‌iPhone‌ users in the UK to view the account balances of select bank cards and credit cards in the Wallet app, and now several more banks have added support for the feature.

Apple added the transaction and card balance functionality to the Wallet app in October as part of its Connected Cards feature, but initially only a handful of bank cards were compatible.

According to Apple's updated support document, account balance and full transaction history viewing now works with cards from Barclays, Barclaycard, First Direct, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds, M&S Bank, Monzo Bank, NatWest Bank, and Royal Bank of Scotland.

UK banks support the Open Banking API to integrate with the Wallet app, which made the feature widely available to UK users from the off, but the Connected Cards rollout in the United States has been slower.

Following the release of the feature, MacRumors discovered that code in iOS 17.1 and references on Apple's website suggested that the feature would expand to the US, which turned out to be accurate. For example, users of Discover cards were first to see the option to view their total card balance and transaction history in Apple Wallet.

Note that if you don't see the option to Get Started below your card in the Wallet app, your card issuer currently isn't eligible.

Rather odd, if not slightly embarrassing, for Starling Bank not being there yet the traditional high street banks are. One of their main selling points has always been being ahead of the curve technology-wise.

Starling worked during the beta phase. I connected it on the release candidate but something has broken since. Mine hasn't updated since 25 October and Starling have confirmed issues on Twitter.

It's a bit pointless anyway, it just shows the balance so for any actual detail you go into the banks app as you used to do.

I have been thinking of moving over to them from NatWest, do you use them at all? Are they any good? Reliable and offer good service? I have a Chase bank account for savings as they offer 4% at the moment and do not lock your money into the account.
I've been very happy with them, overall. Certainly light years ahead of HSBC, who I was with before.
Currently they pay 3.25% on the cleared balance (across all "spaces" - which you can use as savings areas without any lock in) at the end of the day.

Starling Bank: They’re working on getting it running again. Got a response from them to say there are issues (their side) with it, and support’s withdrawn until they’re resolved.

I have used Starling for my sole proprietorship business and I can highly recommend them.
The app works really well — which is why this lack of implementation is quite odd.
Also the ability to have clients pay me in £, € or USD is great. To open a foreign currency account with NatWest was a huge pain and came with fat fees…

Yes I have both a personal and business account with them. Have been with them since early 2018 and have been overall very impressed. To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever had a problem so I can’t comment on their customer service.

I use starling for a joint account and a couple of business accounts and they been straightforward and very easy to set up compared to the traditional banks. Recommended.

Regarding this feature it would be good to see these balances on the Apple Pay screen - that’s where it would be useful to know if you don’t have enough money in an account.
Thanks guys, much appreciate the feedback. I will definitely look into them, it will take a bit of planning as my pay and bills are on the NatWest account, been with them for years but with no interest to speak off, and their recent controversy it’s time to move on.
