GarageBand for Mac Updated With Important Security Fixes

Apple today updated the GarageBand app on macOS with "important security fixes," but the release notes do not provide any specific details. Mac users should update GarageBand as soon as possible due to potential security vulnerabilities.

GarageBand Mac
GarageBand version 10.4.8 is available on the Mac App Store.

GarageBand is one of Apple's music creation apps alongside Logic Pro. The update for GarageBand was released on the same day as Apple seeded the third betas of macOS 13.3, iOS 16.4, tvOS 16.4, and watchOS 9.4 to developers for testing.

Update: The GarageBand update fixes a pair of vulnerabilities, according to Apple's security page. One vulnerability could allow an app to gain elevated privileges during the GarageBand installation, and with the other, parsing a maliciously crafted MIDI file could lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

When was the last time you used GarageBand? It's been a really long time for me.
Very frequently actually. I have many plugins I use for guitar with it, I record covers and my song for my DnD campaign was recently recorded with GarageBand. It's really good for a free program and I wouldn't benefit from Logic Pro with my current needs. GarageBand is already plugin flexible so can be extended quite a bit with Audio Units and VSTs. It also acts as a great gateway to Logic Pro. Those who do eventually upgrade to Logic will likely have already learned a fair bit with GarageBand and a lot will be directly transferable even if there are some differences in UI and such to learn still there's also a lot of similarities. While Logic has a free trial, the free indefinite nature of GarageBand allows beginners and students to learn with it and makes them more likely to pick Logic over other solutions if they eventually want to upgrade to a bigger tool. That evolution but with iMovie and Final Cut was what made me eventually acquire the entire Final Cut suite with Motion and Compressor. - If I ever want anything bigger than GarageBand I will also be led to Logic.

Do people even use Garage Band anymore now that it's 2023? ?
Why, does it have expiration date? Are the synth knobs rusty? Are pianos inside out of tune?

Garageband is still a great app for what it is - especially on iOS/iPadOS - but I do miss the heady days of when the iLife suite got major updates yearly. They added a huge amount of value to the Mac platform throughout the mid-2000s.

Speaking of things that were better 'back then', I wish Apple would bring back Aperture. The world's needs a less-sucky (both fundamentally and in your wallet) alternative to Lightroom.
