This is the price point at which this machine should have been launched. A quality machine for every day users for under $1,000.

The base M2 Air is more computer than most normal people need (even with the 'slow' SSD and 'inadequate' 8GB RAM). I got one as a secondary machine, and frankly, it is amazing. For normal computing tasks, surfing w. lots of tabs, MS Office, casual photo and video editing, this thing flies. I can barely differentiate its performance vs. my M1Pro 14".

A chrome book does that for $300. There is very little more this offers over a basic machine because it’s held back by 8GB of RAM. Great processor, but no way a $1000 computer with 8GB of ram is worth it. Don’t let people fool you, this will become a bottleneck sooner than you think.

I made the mistake of falling for the bUt OpTiMiZeD crap that the community spills On the OG iPad pro that shipped with 2GB, and guess what less than two years in and that product was nearly useless. The same will happen with 8GB as apps and webpages get heavier over time.
I have the base M2. I also have a 16GB M1Pro 14". This is not about people fooling me, I have hands on, real-world experience with both. What I can say is that the dis-information about the base M2 Air has gotten out of hand. The benchmark numbers bear little to no relevance on how the machine is to use.

The 8GB Ram is constantly pointed to as a bottleneck. Let me just say that there is literally nothing that you can do from a normal productivity perspective that will slow this machine down. MS Office, Chrome with a million tabs, Photo Editing, light video editing (i.e. short 1080p or 4K projects) all work like butter in a multitasking setting. If you're doing more than that then you might need more, but for people who just need a computer for computing or school, this will be amazing. And I've had $300 Chromebooks - it's not even close!

I'm blown away at how close it is to my M1Pro for daily computing work. It's a remarkable machine. That is not based on benchmarks - that is based on hands on, daily use for the past couple of months.

Is the 256 GB drive speed really that bad on that model?
Not in normal use. The benchmarks tell you it is slower, and I am sure it is possible to devise a YouTube torture test to 'prove' how much slower it is, but if you're just doing normal computer stuff it's impossible to tell from the much faster SSD in my M1Pro.

You’re not getting a Chromebook that matches the quality of the MacBook Air for $300. That’s just ridiculous. You can get a chrome book cheaper with almost the quality but it’s probably gonna cost you over $600. Oh by the way that Chromebook is going to have 8GB of RAM.

You can’t also compare 2GB to 8GB. If you do some quick math you’ll find out that 8GB is 4 times 2GB

"A quality machine for every day users for under $1,000".

This is what the Marketing department comes up with before running it by the Engineering or Accounting departments ;).
