Tom Hiddleston to Star in Apple TV+ Antarctic Exploration Drama 'The White Darkness'

Tom Hiddleston, best known for his role as "Loki" in the Marvel series of movies, is set to star in an upcoming Apple TV+ show called "The White Darkness."

The series is based on David Grann's nonfiction work of the same name, which chronicled the Antarctic expeditions of British explorer and army officer Henry Worsley. Worsley journeyed across Antarctica in 2008, leading an expedition to pioneer a route through the Transantarctic Mountains. He also returned in 2011 and 2015.

Apple's TV show will tell Worsley's story, with Hiddleston set to executive produce and star as the main character.

"The White Darkness" is inspired by the true life account of Henry Worsley, a devoted husband and father, a former soldier, a man of deep honor and sacrifice, but also a man deeply obsessed with adventure, manifesting in an epic journey crossing Antarctica on foot. Starring Hiddleston as Worsley, this is a spellbinding story of courage, love, family and the extremes of human capacity.

Hiddleston was most recently in the "Loki" TV series on Disney+, and he also stars in Apple TV+ series "The Essex Serpent," which will debut in May. "The White Darkness" is being developed by Soo Hugh, who also worked on ‌Apple TV‌+ series "Pachinko."

I didn't know it was axed. The show was great!
I agree it was great and it would be lovely to see that character again. However, it was not “axed.” It was adapted from a novel by John Le Carré, who did not write a sequel. And he died. As far as I know, he never wrote a sequel to any of his novels. I imagine his estate would have to be convinced of the worthiness of a sequel script in order to be persuaded to sell the rights to one, assuming they would consider it at all. A big part of the appeal of “The Night Manager” is the fact that he does, indeed, start the story as a hotel night manager who experiences something awful and is propelled into being an agent. He’s an amateur driven by a very strong sense of remorse to pursue justice who has to try to keep his head despite being in over his head. In a sequel, he’d simply be an agent. He makes a great agent though. He might make a great Bond….

Apple should have just bought the season 2 for Night Manager. Was a good series that was axed for some reason.

I like the title. Some of my favorite photographic explorations in college were long exposure night photography scapes taken during snowstorms or shortly thereafter. There's something mesmerizing about the way that snow makes everything look so smooth and new, at at night everything is so still and empty and calm. But then you get these long exposures of the snow falling and blowing and it adds all this chaos above this pristine surface. Hard to describe.

I would just sit out for hours all night in college all alone freezing my ass off taking these pictures trying to capture this. Hope the cinematography of this movie brings back some of those old feelings for me. That series was for black and white film early in college before they let us bust out the dSLRs, which were somewhat new at the time—at least the decent ones where it started to become more serious. I need to take my negatives sometime to get them professionally scanned. I miss those shots.

This should be great.
Hiddleston is fantastic! Saw him perform some Shakespeare excellently in the West End almost a decade ago.
