$149 is not bad but $129 is ideal....Compared to the last gen. one, this is faster and smoother with an excellent remote. I'd grab the Costco deal if you're in the market, worth the extra money over the HD

You can get one from Costco online for the same price. At least I did yesterday.

Those residing in the USA and seeking discounted Apple TVs may wanna check out Apple’s certified refurbished store: The 2nd gen (2021) 4k 32 GB version sells for $149 and 64 GB version for $169. It has the same warranty as new products and from my experience looks and functions like new. The sealed box does say it’s certified refurbished. The availability fluctuates these days, if it’s sold out, just check again later. https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished/appletv
Apple refurb products are great as well.

With Apple refurb it's essentially the same as new, just passed through QC twice instead of once.

I bought one when Apple were giving out the gift cards a couple of weeks ago, set it all up, brilliant...then suddenly found out BBC iPlayer doesn't support subtitles on the thing and from reading about this is unlikely to be resolved as it has been a problem for years now!

I would mostly agree, but it only makes sense if you have a 4K TV or plan to get one in the near future. On the flip side, even if your streams are 1080 HD, a lot of 4K TVs have upscaling technology that still makes 1080 streams look better. But if you are happy with 1080 TVs, then it's a waste of money to get 4K version.
I own no 4K TVs and I just upgraded 3 of my ATVs to this latest version from the HD version. The interface navigation is much smoother and some apps are working much better (DirecTV Stream being the biggest upgrade). I blame that more on the app, but I had to stop waiting on DTVStream to get their sh-t together.

Was $140 last night
Are you sure that wasn't the HD version? That's currently at 140.
