Hands-On With the New iPhone 12 Pro

Happy launch day! The new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are arriving to pre-order customers as of today and are hitting stores worldwide. We picked up a Pacific Blue iPhone 12 Pro and thought we'd share our first impressions for MacRumors readers still deciding on a purchase or waiting for their own iPhones to arrive.

This year's iPhones include no EarPods or power adapter in the box, so there's a new, more environmentally friendly box that's slimmer than the prior boxes. There's the phone itself, a Lightning to USB-C cable, a few small regulatory booklets, an Apple sticker, and a SIM ejection tool.

The squared-off edges of the new iPhone design are a major departure from the rounded edges we've had since the iPhone 6, so the feel of the flatter edge will take some getting used to. It can be a bit more uncomfortable to hold in the hand when you're unaccustomed to it, but it does feel secure and easy to hold on to, even though it's thinner than the iPhone 11 models.

Design wise, the new iPhone 12 Pro looks similar to the iPad Pro or something like the iPhone 5, so if you love that flat edged look, this is the phone for you. We think it looks great, and it's a refreshing change from rounded edges. There have already been complaints about those shiny stainless steel edges on the Pro models, and we can confirm, that glossy material is a fingerprint magnet. The Pacific Blue color is unique, but it doesn't do much in terms of hiding fingerprints.

The iPhone 12 Pro is 6.1 inches, which is about the same size as the iPhone 11 before. Last year's Pro model was 5.8 inches, so expect a bit of a size increase, but overall, the sizes aren't hugely different.

Apple added a new Ceramic Shield display that offers 4x stronger drop protection, but we're not going to test that claim and ruin a perfectly good iPhone. Drop tests will be coming, though, and note that Apple makes no claims when it comes to protection against scratches and dings. Our iPhone is new enough that it's in perfect condition, but there have been early reports that the screen is easier to scratch than normal, which is something to keep an eye on.

We covered MagSafe cases and chargers earlier this week before we had a new iPhone and were curious if the magnetic connection is stronger with an actual iPhone 12 in hand, and it does seem like there's a small difference. It's still not as magnetic as we might have expected, and while we don't have a Wallet accessory on hand to test yet, there's a good chance it's not going to be the best accessory to slap onto the back of the phone.

All of the new iPhone 12 models support 5G, but we can't give feedback on connection speeds because it's just too early. That's something we'll follow up on in another video, but for the fastest mmWave 5G, you need to be in specific parts of specific cities to use it, so most people won't be experiencing it.

Most people will connect to slower Sub-6GHz networks. We have a T-Mobile iPhone 12 Pro, and so far, the speeds seem to be a bit faster than on LTE, but for Verizon, LTE was faster. We'll also need to come back to the A14 chip after we've had some time to test it out, but it is unsurprisingly the fastest chip in an iPhone yet.

The iPhone 12 Pro has a middle-tier camera that's better than the iPhone 12 camera but not quite as good as the camera setup in the Pro Max, launching in November. There are three lenses along with a LiDAR Scanner, which brings some neat features like Night Mode portraits, ‌Night Mode‌ for the Ultra Wide lens, and improved low-light performance.

The LiDAR Scanner works by sending out light and measuring the time it takes to reflect back from objects, mapping out the entire space around you. In addition to photography features, it also has some AR applications, but developers need to incorporate the new technology into apps before we can see what it can really do.

As for the camera quality, we'll have a deep dive, but early photos are promising. The 7-element Wide camera has an f/1.6 aperture that lets in 27 percent more light, and there's an improved optical image stabilization system that makes 5000 adjustments per second. The iPhone 12 Pro is also capable of shooting 4K HDR and Dolby Vision video, which we'll show off more in-depth in a future video.

Make sure to stay tuned to MacRumors because we're going to have a lot more iPhone coverage coming, including those aforementioned deep dives into 5G connectivity and camera technology. When November rolls around, we'll also be able to see the real differences between the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max camera systems.

Picked up my 12 Pro today from the Apple Store. Pretty seamless, no line to speak of. Took it home and activated it.

Wow, what a difference 4 years makes! Coming from an iPhone 7 Plus, the difference is... quite noticeable. Perfect size though, I have a feeling the Max would have been way too big for me. I love love LOVE the flat sides again! Takes me right back to the 5S. Feels great to hold. Missed this.

Also, I used to be adamant about having Touch ID. Not anymore. Screw it. After a few hours, Face ID is faster and more convenient. That could also be the benefit of having 4 years worth of revision time.

One issue I did encounter was during the number port process, the screen hung. As I had no idea what to do, I called Apple support. They had me power down (volume up, volume down, hold power button; didn’t know how to on these new models lol). Anyway, it worked. Actually had to power it down again during later in the process too, so if you find yourself in a similar position, do that. Afterward, everything happened without a hitch.

Loving my iPhone 12 Pro. :)

There is very little difference between most quality cameras when there is good lighting conditions (e.g. broad daylight). The obvious difference comes when there is poor light. In good light you will be flat out seeing any difference between 11 pro, 12 pro, a good DLSR, or even a 2020 SE, and what difference you do see will mostly be due to the software presenting the photo to you. In low light the 12 pro will beat the 11 pro, the SE won't even be in the game (but mostly due to lack of night mode software, not so much the camera - but if you gave it night mode then it would be almost as good as the 11 pro), and the DLSR will wipe the floor with all of them, as it has massive lenses, and a massive sensor in comparison. Software can be very clever, and the LIDAR adds something, but physics can't be beaten (and you can post process the DLSR RAW files with very clever software too, making the results phenomenal). When it comes to low light photography, thinner and lighter is the antichrist.

I came from a 6s+ to a 12pro

### first the downsides ####

* I do already miss touchID and a home button.

* I turned siri off from the power button

* I honestly haven’t found a case I love. I ended up getting the Otterbox Aura series just to have something until I do find a case I like. I’d like a case with a little higher lip for if the phone falls screen down. the current cases are very shallow and might protect against large grains of sand, but that’s about it. I’d Ideally like a case that holds 2 cards (drivers license until my state issues digital ones, and 1 credit card)

* I wish faceID could register 2+ faces. so my wife and I could both be registered on each other’s phones. the mask thing doesn’t bother me since it’s occasional for me, but people wearing them daily I can see how that’s a pain.

* It feels weird how much space is under the keyboard for the emoji and mic buttons. not a bad thing necessarily but feels weird.

* Is there a way to dim or hide the white line at the bottom of the screen telling me that I can pull up for app closing/switching?

* I miss being able to see the battery percentage with the battery charge indicator icon.

* repairing Ape watch was kind of unexpected, but went smoothly

* Got a MagSafe charger which is kind of neat but if I end up with a case that holds a couple cards I’m betting MagSafe will be kind of a “non-feature” for my personal usage. I’ve looked at the magsafe wallet attachments and they seem like they come off to easily and perhaps add more bulk than I need.

####### Now the good stuff ! ######

* setup was super easy, tell the 12 to transfer from my old phone, put the phones next to each other and wait a little while. It honestly doesn’t get any easier. (I also turned on iCloud sync)

* activation was simple, I just physically swapped SIM cards, this made it instant and no fuss about data plans, etc.

* I love that my phone is smaller than my old one yet has a bigger, clearer screen.

* So far I really like the build quality. I was concerned I’d be dissapointed in myself fir getting boring graphite color but, honestly I think it looks great and it’s in a case anyways :)

* lidar has been fun to play with, I’m not seeing a “free” app that does what I want to who knows maybe I’ll adventure away from my C# love into Swift to see if I can make something.

* I love how it feels in my hand compared to my old phone. I can pretty much hold and type with 1 hand.

* It’s zippy!

* I know other people hate the notch but I am kinda liking organizationally the dedicated space for status icons and pull downs.

* WiFi range is better in our house. we still use WiFi 5 so I can’t tell you WiFi 6 performance but for us WiFi on the 12 is way better than older phones we had. the 12 gets full signal in places my 6s+ would totally drop out.

* FaceID is quicker than I expected. I’m still adjusting to it automatically doing it’s thing rather than an intentional action of TouchID.

* The screen protector I got was the easiest one to date to install. It was the Belkin screen protector sold on Apple’s website. I’d totally buy it again assuming it performs well. easy install and don’t even notice it after that.

* We do have a ton of USB ports and lightning cables around the house but I still bought a USB-C brick for when I need faster charging.

* sound from the speakers is fantastic compared to my old phone, talking on speaker is much nicer.

* weight is good for me. fells light yet heavy enough to feel like good build quality. I plan to keep this phone for 5 years or more if possible and it “feels” like it should make it :)

* still testing the camera but so far I do like it better m. I’ve not tried Dolby Vision yet.

* web pages and scrolling are a dream compared to before.

* I don’t plan on getting my phone wet but it is nice to think if my toddler splashed that I might not kill my phone.
