Google today released a new version of its Gmail app for iOS devices, and while not listed as a new feature, the update introduces support for the iPhone X, Apple's newest flagship device.

The new version of the Gmail app allows it to take full advantage of the larger bezel-free display of the iPhone X, doing away with the large black bars that were previously present at the top and bottom of the app.

With the new view, you can see an additional email when viewing your main inbox, and there is more room for reading and composing email messages. It also looks much nicer in general without the ugly black bars.

Today's update also introduces support for adding non-Google email accounts to the Gmail app via IMAP.

Google has been slowly updating its iOS apps with iPhone X support and has thus far updated Gmail, Google Maps, and its productivity apps like Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides.

I'm sorry you had to use the GMail app with black bars for the last 32 days.

But your long national nightmare is over.

It took GOOGLE almost three months to adjust freaking layout to the new screen size ? WTF, do they rely on single interns doing their job after finished shift at McDonald’s ?

Two questions:
1) So I can get push notifications with their app right?
2) If I use this app, how much closer is Google to owning my soul?
You have been able to receive push notifications from the Gmail app since few years ago.

Google already owns your soul.

Well, to be honest, iOS 11 was announced and available for beta testing and development in June. By following the safe area rules they could've started updating Gmail back then already. Then, the iPhone X got announced in September and they could've tested it in Xcode simulator from that date onwards. So actually Google had months the time to update their app.

Not saying we have the right to complain about a free app, but I personally used Gmail and Google Maps a lot less because of the app not being updated. I can't imagine Google wants users to use their most important apps less (I even tried out Apple Maps for a day, but ran back to Google Maps quickly enough). But both have been updated, so everybody can move along now :)
