Cadillac Announces CarPlay and Android Auto Support Coming to 2016 Models

2015 Cadillac CTSGM today announced that its luxury car brand Cadillac will add CarPlay and Android Auto support to its 2016 model year vehicles, which will begin rolling out this summer.

CarPlay will be available in all 2016 vehicles equipped with a CUE 8-inch multi-touch screen, excluding the SRX Crossover, while Android Auto will be phased in at a later date.

"Cadillac CUE provides owners a smart and simple way to access both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. A “Projection” icon will appear on the CUE screen, to enable simpler, easier access to key smartphone functions, including navigation, contacts, hands-free text messaging and select applications supported by Apple or Google."

CarPlay-equipped vehicles have a built-in touchscreen display that provides quick and easy access to Maps, Phone, Messages, Music, Podcasts and third-party apps such as Spotify, Rdio, iHeartRadio, CBS Radio and MLB At Bat. CarPlay also uses Siri voice control and interfaces with your vehicle's knobs, dials and buttons for hands-free or eyes-free control of your iPhone.

Apple also introduced a handful of CarPlay improvements during its WWDC keynote this week, including support for apps developed by carmakers to control the in-car experience and compatibility with larger and wider screens. CarPlay will also function wirelessly in future vehicles, eliminating the need to take your iPhone out of your pocket or bag after getting in your vehicle.

GM is also adding CarPlay support to 14 new 2016 Chevrolet models later this year.

It's bad enough having the suggestion that I need to upgrade my seven month old iPad mini to use all the new features of ios9, now I have to buy a new car to use CarPlay??
I'm sick of the way Apple is focussed so much on getting people to spend money. Steve would turn in his grave if he knew what Cook is doing with the company. Tim Cook and his mob can repeat "I'm SO excited" as much as they want, but I am getting much less excited about the direction Apple are going.
Almost every word in your post is wrong.

I'm in agreement with you. I think they're generally ugly and GM apparently has no idea how to get away from ghetto and/or 80-year-old white man design. However any time I ever call a Cadillac ugly, I usually get people jumping all over me about it. Mostly Americans though from what I've noticed. (Note: I am also American)

opinion on beauty/ugly is completely subjective, thats all. I find Cadillac's design to be stunning. I love the hard lines. The angular / muscular appearance. The dagger / wedge shape.

but I'm not going to convince you of that. Just like nobody will ever convince me that Porche's look good. Or BMW's are worth it, or the like. Purely subjective thing looks are.

Some people just like to believe their opinions should be shared by everyone and get angry when they aren't.

How would Steve Jobs have made CarPlay backwards compatible with older infotainment systems?

Cadillac is unbelievably overrated. Their design is pretty bad save for a model or two. Their lure is more ghetto than anything.
That's your opinion, of course. I don't live anywhere near the ghetto but my Cadillac seems to survive just fine.

You don't have to buy a new car to use CarPlay ('http://www.crutchfield.com/S-bkKYCqZvix4/shopsearch/carplay.html?awcp=1t1&awcr=49846184963&awdv=c&awkw=carplay%20stereos&awmt=e&awnw=g').

You could apply this Cadillac too. Their pricing is now almost dead even or just a few percentage points below BMW. I could understand your statement if Caddy's were priced like Hyundai Genesis in value per dollar, but that hasn't been the case for some time.

Back to the topic at hand...
Are the 2015 CUE much better than in the past? I tried out a 2013 ATS CUE and that thing was laggy as hell. Makes MMI/Idrive look super fast. Heck, even the TLX is faster lol.
In an image driven market that is the luxury car market, being value priced hurts a brands image. Cadillac isn't losing customers to the Germans or Lexus, buyers are going back down to the mainstream brands now that the CTS is properly priced. Hardly a good perception you want to develop if you want to attract people away from BMW and Mercedes who buy their vehicles just based on the badge. Plus GM has Buick and value pricing Cadillac's will also step on Buick's toes.

Cadillac isn't aiming to be like Lincoln, Acura, Buick Volvo, etc where they sell you on value. They want to be like BMW and Mercedes where you buy based on the badge even if the car wearing the badge is a vehicle that dilutes it( the new FWD 1 series and CLA).

They have not doing a good job with it because their marketing sucks and dealers can't change their business model from either selling $80k Escalades or putting vinyl tops on the CTS to sell to old people..... And of course they are now getting past the mistake they have been making for the past 10 years of value pricing themselves.

CUE is much improved compared to the initial version of it. Have no issues with it in my dads 2014 ATS. Only area where it is still a bit laggy is the zoom in/out animation of the navigation map, but everything else is fluid and responsive.
