The position will be in Apple's Handwriting Recognition team, presumably the one responsible for Mac OS X's Inkwell technology. The Inkwell technology was based on handwriting technology developed in-house by Apple for the Newton handheld computer in the 90s. At the time, it was widely considered to be the best handwriting solution available.
While Apple has not made much use of the Inkwell technology in Mac OS X, there have been ongoing rumors of Apple planning on offering an Apple Tablet.
