Intro to 64-Bit Computing

Arstechnica posted an "Introduction to 64-bit computing" with focus on the AMD x86 architecture:


    Between IBM's 970 and AMD's Opteron, it's now looking more and more like 2003 will be the year that 64-bit computing finally arrives in the consumer market, and with that in mind I've put together a basic introduction to 64-bit computing for the Ars audience. The article discusses the general idea of 64-bit computing, as well as some of the specifics of AMD's x86-64 ISA, the 64-bit extension to the x86 ISA.
