Apple's 2027 20th Anniversary iPhone Could Have Dramatic Redesign

Apple is planning a major overhaul of the iPhone's design for its 20th anniversary device, and a new report has some information on what we can expect. Citing unspecified supply chain sources, Korean news site Dealsite suggests that Apple doesn't just want a curved-edge display, it wants a display that wraps down around all four edges of the device using an advanced four-side bending display technology.

We've heard about Apple's plans for a wraparound display before, but the report highlights some of the technical hoops that Apple has to jump through. The display circuitry has to be bent around all four edges, with an ultra-thin film encapsulation (TFE) layer to keep the OLED panel safe from moisture and air. Apple also has to implement under-display Face ID and an under-display camera for the all-screen display that it wants.

The display curvature that Apple is planning for goes beyond edge-to-edge curved displays that we've seen from other companies like Samsung in the past.

LG Display is allegedly preparing to produce panels for Apple's 20th anniversary ‌iPhone‌, and has started placing orders for equipment. Samsung Display isn't yet investing in machinery for the project because it is making displays for the ‌iPhone‌ Fold that's coming out in 2026.

Like the 2017 ‌iPhone‌ X, the 20th anniversary ‌iPhone‌ will dictate the ‌iPhone‌'s design for years to come. Apple is aiming for an ‌iPhone‌ that looks like a slab of glass with no cutouts or bezels, and it remains to be seen whether the company will achieve that goal.

For more on what to expect from Apple's 20th anniversary ‌iPhone‌ in fall 2027, we have a dedicated guide that's updated regularly with new information.
