OpenAI has rolled out an update to ChatGPT that changes the default large language model to GPT-4.1 mini for all users across its platforms, and Apple Intelligence users also stand to benefit.

The behind-the-scenes switch means millions of ChatGPT users are now interacting with the newer, more capable AI model without having to manually select it or pay for premium access.
For Apple device users with the ChatGPT extension for Apple Intelligence enabled, this means any queries directed to ChatGPT through Siri will now leverage the improved model automatically.

Apple introduced ChatGPT integration with Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.2 to expand the iPhone's AI capabilities in several ways. When enabled, Siri can leverage ChatGPT for complex queries about photos and documents, and the integration also extends to Writing Tools for text and image generation.
No ChatGPT account is required to get started, but connecting a free or paid ChatGPT account unlocks additional features and more frequent access to advanced capabilities. Note that only iPhone 15 Pro and later models and Mac models with Apple silicon support Apple Intelligence and related ChatGPT integration.
According to OpenAI, the new GPT-4.1 mini model offers better context handling and more nuanced responses compared to previous default models, while maintaining similar response speeds.

Alongside the new default mini model for all users, OpenAI has also integrated its flagship GPT-4.1 model into ChatGPT for paid accounts, making it available to Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers starting today.
