That’s a good price for a consumption device, but another $150 for an M2 air is such a better deal.
I don't think m2's are going for 400 dollars, but you can buy an iPad Air M1 for:

250-279 Used
300-370 Refurbished
400-450 Sealed

For that you get (over iPad 10):

20x faster USB transfer speeds
Laminated Screen
Proper Apple Pencil Support
2x graphics performance
2x cpu performance
2x RAM
Support for Magic Keyboard
Apple Intelligence.

If you get an M2 iPad Air, you get all of the above and:

Horizontal Camera
Support For Apple Pencil Pro
%15 faster cpu (2.3x over A14 (multicore))
%25 faster gpu (2.5x over A14)
%40 faster npu, (altough i don't think this alone will matter much)
1.8x memory bandwith (this makes a difference when you are switching from an app to another all the time)
More Storage Options with base storage being 2x higher

But you unfortunately lose the sim tray if you go for cellular

EDIT: I should add that M1 and M2 comes with external monitor support

The thing about the iPad is that many folks just use them as simple consumption devices that they take on vacation and enjoy while couch surfing. I fall into this group, and the iPad 10 is great for this purpose. It can also add a productivity boost as a secondary screen when paired with a MacBook and Continuity. Get a pencil and you have a nice tablet for making markups or taking notes. Anyway, at $250, it seems like a good deal.

Also, I notice people tend to keep their iPads well beyond their eligibility for software updates. I suppose this is because folks use iPads for basic tasks that don't require the latest OS updates.

I just bought a Pixel tablet. I really wanted an iPad but multiple user accounts was a key requirement. I find Apple's stance on this so annoying because while they would obviously prefer to sell us two iPads, I really don't need two.

Thank you for adding all that. I made a comment that didn’t really qualify what I said, but you took care of that for me. No trolling, no sarcasm. Thanks for helping make my point. This is more of a YMMV deal but here is the M2 for 399.

I would generally recommend an Air for most. But at $250, the 10th gen iPad should serve well for those looking out for a basic device. Will not be getting Apple Intelligence but it should get software support for many more years. Also it comes in some nice bright colours. Love the Pink and Yellow.
