PlayStation Adds Support for Passkeys as Password Alternative

PlayStation account owners will soon be able to start using a passkey as an alternative to a password when logging into a PlayStation account on the web, in an app, or on a PlayStation device.

Passkey integration is set to be introduced at some point today, and users will be able to log in and authenticate their accounts with Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode on an iPhone.

Passkeys are considered more convenient and secure than a traditional password, with sign-ins streamlined through biometric authentication. Passkeys are resistant to online attacks such as phishing because there's no password to steal and no one-time SMS code that can be intercepted.

Apple has supported passkeys since 2022, and passkeys are available on iOS 16 and later, iPadOS 16 and later, and macOS Ventura and later.

Many companies have been implementing support for passkeys, including Twitter, Google, PayPal, Best Buy, Microsoft, and eBay.

This is very good news, PlayStation's sign in is uniquely tedious. Email and password are entered separately on two different pages, instead of two fields on the same page, and they have a not-a-robot-test that forces you to rotate the object to face where the hand on the left is pointing. And it's a clunky user interface, too.

The PlayStation Network (PSN) passkey implementation is more progressive (daring?) than any other I’ve used to date. Once enabled, it automatically disables password login and 2-step verification if you had it enabled. Other services have let me add a passkey as an additional login method but never remove the password and 2SV.

Email recovery is still an option so the risk of losing access should be low. Make sure you have access to the email inbox used for the PSN account, and any one of date of birth, phone for security SMS code or security question answer if you created one.

Passkey autofill works with the standard email login field, similar to PayPal but without the redundant 2SV, it’s very streamlined.

Love this and as a 1Password user it keeps all my passkeys in-sync across all of my devices (even non Apple ones).

Since it's Microsoft, it would probably be right around the time Microsoft IDs let you use Passkeys, and it will tie in with Windows 11 somehow, in some way.
You can already use Passkeys with Microsoft Accounts apparently:

(haven't tried it myself)
