Apple Says iOS 16 Update Coming Soon With Fix for Advertising-Related Issue

Apple is working on an iOS 16 update with a fix for an issue related to its advertising framework SKAdNetwork, according to the company's system status page. Apple says the issue began on November 3, but it did not provide any additional details.

General iOS 16 Feature Yellow
"There is an issue impacting SKAdNetwork for users on iOS 16.1," says Apple. "We are working to quickly resolve this issue in a software update."

SKAdNetwork enables advertisers to measure the success of ads by attributing app installations to specific ad campaigns — in other words, it allows advertisers to know how successful an ad is at getting users to download an app from the App Store. iOS 16.1 was released two weeks ago with SKAdNetwork 4.0, which provides more performance insights for advertisers, adds support for web ads, and includes other improvements.

Earlier today, we reported that Apple is preparing an iOS 16.1.1 update, which will hopefully address this bug and an issue with Wi-Fi randomly disconnecting on some iPhones. iOS 16.2 is also in beta testing and is expected to be released in December.

We've reached out to Apple for comment on the matter and will update this story if we receive any additional information.

(Thanks, Gustavo Blanco!)

Apple Changes How You Order a Mac

Apple recently updated its online store with a new ordering process for Macs, including the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro. There used to be a handful of standard configurations available for each Mac, but now you must configure a Mac entirely from scratch on a feature-by-feature basis. "Ad issue" you say? We've got our best team on it. Fix is imminent. ?

While not necessarily linked to their recent push to include ads to their OSes, the optics on this are not the Apple I have supported and enjoyed the past three decades. I know... At the end of the day (and maybe even at the start of the day), the only motivation of any publicly traded company is maximizing profits for their shareholders. Tim has lead an impressive charge in this regard. But I'd be lying if I said it didn't sadden me to see Apple head down this path. Puts them even closer to the Googles and Metas of the world - something I never imagined I'd think, let alone share.

The system is working exactly as designed. Gross.

Apologies @TheYayAreaLiving ? and @AhRiHmAn - I added the second and third paragraphs after your reactions (unknowingly). And lots of typos - ouch!

I think this is the first time I will be asked to install an iOS update to help advertisers, rather than users.
