Square Officially Launches Support for Tap to Pay on iPhone

Square today publicly launched support for Tap to Pay on iPhone to sellers across the U.S., enabling small merchants and independent retailers to use their iPhone as a payment terminal.

Apple Tap to Pay iPhone
Tap to Pay on iPhone allows sellers to accept contactless payments directly using an iPhone, with no additional hardware or dongles required. The public launch follows Square's Early Access Program for Tap to Pay on iPhone that began in June.

The feature is available in the Square Point of Sale app for iOS on the iPhone XS or newer. Sellers simply need to open the app, ring up the sale, and present their iPhone to the buyer, who can then tap a contactless payment method such as Apple Pay on the top of the iPhone. Square shared several case studies highlighting how sellers are taking advantage of Tap to Pay on iPhone.

Apple announced Tap to Pay on iPhone back in February. Beyond Square, Apple is working with several partners on Tap to Pay on iPhone, including Stripe, GoDaddy, and Chase. Apple began testing the feature at the Apple Park Visitor Center in May and has since rolled it out to Apple retail stores.

Does it work with a contactless chip card? Or just Apple Pay?
It works with physical contactless cards, and Apple Pay, and Google Pay.

This is incredible, honestly. I can only imagine how this will transform small business. It is also a step forward for contactless payment in all the forms that it may take in the years to come, via iPhone bumping.

Potential Venmo killer?

Now you can just Tap to Pay when splitting a restaurant bill or paying your room mate your share of the rent.
If you want to give 2.6% of the transaction to the banks, sure. But this feature isn't meant for individuals. It's intended for businesses. It just removes the need to carry around a separate tap card reader.

Just FYI - the setup workflow doesn't seem very polished (on Apple's end). I enabled it in the Square app and then every time I tapped the button in Square to take Apple Pay, it looked like it started to load and then it would spring back. Then I saw the welcome email in my inbox. The email didn't say you have to do anything, but once I clicked the link to "Go to Apple Business Register", I was presented with terms to agree to. Then the Square app worked as expected.
