MagSafe-Compatible iPhone Accessories Coming From PopSocket

Apple's new iPhone 12 models are equipped with a ring of magnets in the back that allows them to work with a range of new accessories, including a new magnet-based MagSafe charger that snaps right onto the back of the device.

Apple is creating a line of magnetic accessories, and third-party companies are also working on useful new accessories that will be able to take advantage of the magnetic system. One company that plans to make use of that magnet ring in the ‌iPhone‌ 12 models is PopSocket.

PopSocket, which makes a super popular line of Grip accessories that attach to the back with adhesive, told TechCrunch that it is working on PopSocket products for the new iPhones.

PopSockets will support Apple’s MagSafe technology, TechCrunch has confirmed — meaning you’ll soon be able to pop on and off these ubiquitous iPhone accessories without worrying about the sticker on the back losing its adhesiveness over time and needing a rinse.

Though PopSockets confirmed it has ‌MagSafe‌ products in the works, there's no additional detail available at this time nor do we know when the first MagSafe-based PopSockets might launch.

I've never used a PopSocket, but can someone explain how using magnets won't result in an accidental detachment and possibly cause a phone to drop to the ground?

Can't folks just hold their phone like normal people? Never ever understood this.

Wait a minute...

The magnets might be strong enough to hold the charging puck onto the phone... but are obviously weak enough for you to quickly and easily remove it.

But we're to believe that the magnets are strong enough to hold a PopSocket?!?!

I don't buy it.

If anything... I'd imagine them making a charging puck that was somehow able to charge through a normal sticky PopSocket.
I'm pretty sure the alignment ring on the charging puck is just a piece of metal and all the magnets are in the phone. What if the PopSocket also had magnets though? That would hold better wouldn't it? As long as the got the polarity right of course. Call me crazy, but is seems obvious that different accessories could have different levels of attraction to the phone based on the use case. Also a bunch of dropped phones would be bad business for PopSocket. They're more invested in making sure that doesn't happen than anyone else.
