VUDU App Officially Launches on Apple TV

Typical Apple..."We'll let you watch your VUDU content, but you can't rent or buy it from OUR device!". I guess negotiations with Walmart for Apple to get a piece of the every VUDU rental or purchase must have fallen through.

It's no different than restaurants not letting you bring another companies food in it to sit down and eat.

Anyone use the VUDU app on the AppleTV yet? Thoughts on it?

I was finally able to sign in yesterday and saw my movies/tv shows I have (mostly Disney).

This morning I started Beauty and the Beast 2017 and it looked less than stellar. I then opened the iTunes version and it looked better. I scrolled ahead to the snow scene and on VUDU everything looked a tad washed out and in a lower resolution…same spot playing via iTunes stream and it was crisp and as bright/full color as it should be. I let it play a little longer in case the quality needed to ramp up, and while it seemed to get better, it never displayed fantastically.

I’ve used YouTube, Vimeo, TV Station channel/Apps, etc and though some may start out a bit lesser quality, they quickly ramp up and look great. My wife might have been up using her phone to check facebook, so it wasn’t like we were overusing our stream. And I started to just watch VUDU for a while without trying iTunes.

So, anyone else give it a try and have similar or different results? I don’t see an resolution settings in the app.

I tested Rogue One on both Vudu and iTunes and the video quality seemed the same to me. The Vudu audio was lesser as reported earlier.

As expected, the VUDU Player app on Apple TV is limited in one respect -- users can't rent or buy any movie or TV show directly from Apple TV, so they'll first have to add content to their collection elsewhere before navigating to Apple TV in order to view it.


Additional features include Siri voice search to find content within your VUDU collection, and a wishlist where users can add any title to save for later, and view on any platform that VUDU is available on. Users on Reddit ('https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/6v7t64/vudu_app_now_available_on_apple_tv/') noted that there is no integration with Apple's TV app.

The official launch of the VUDU Player app for Apple TV comes after rumblings about the app began in March ('https://www.macrumors.com/2017/03/08/vudu-apple-tv-app/'), and then last week a report by Variety confirmed ('https://www.macrumors.com/2017/08/15/vudu-coming-to-apple-tv-august-22/') its release date of August 22.

For anyone without a VUDU account, the company encourages new users to head to its signup page ('https://www.vudu.com/watch/signupc/index.html') to create a free account before launching the Apple TV app, since Apple's App Store guidelines prevent it from adding a sign up option within the app. On the web, users can browse, rent, and buy over 100,000 titles, link an existing UltraViolet and Disney Movies Anywhere account, and then sync everything with their Apple TV app to view their collection on Apple's fourth-generation set-top box.

Do you do Vudu? The $2 conversion of home DVDs and Blu-Rays is a pretty nice feature.

No, I don't have a DVD/Bluray collection. My parents had some videos growing up but they never really bought many and neither did I until I wasn't poor any more and out of college making money. It also helps that my roommate through college had a huge movie library and was a big movie geek, and that before that my best friend growing up also had a big collection, worked at the movie theater and would get us free tickets to everything, and was also a big movie geek and is now a lower-level movie director working his way up. In college Netflix streaming came out which was good enough for me, and also Redbox. So it wasn't until the last five years or so that I've started buying movies. My old roommate is still a good friend and he'll sometimes send me a batch of codes because he prefers physical copies, and I've found out about code marketplaces in the last year.

I should check the YouTube/GooglePlay version now too.

It looked like 720 HD or something, not full 1080 HD. I figured Disney would be the top quality for a newer release. I know some of my VUDU movies are SD, I think one is either HDX or 4K perhaps...check that: a few UHD movies in my collection.

Yeah, I don't have anything in both for a comparison of the same content.

I guess I could connect my Vudu locker with DMA (right now it's only connected with iTunes and Google/YT), then I could do a much better comparison. I could also "disconnect" it, I was kind of keeping Disney out of Vudu just to avoid clutter (between Disney and it's other properties, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel Studios ... we have a bunch of Disney titles!)

It does look better vs. Airplay, and there's no question for me, it's more convenient.

I checked out Hateful 8, Avatar, Aliens, they looked pretty fantastic, H8 has some especially beautiful shots that can get blown out (outside, snow).

Maybe a brief network clog? Something Disney related? Phantom space monsters?
