A new study that measures iPhone usage rates by state suggests that Apple's iPhone is most popular in states like Alaska, Montana, Vermont, New York, Kansas, and Mississippi. The study, conducted by Chitika Insights on December 25 through December 31, sampled "hundreds of millions" of U.S.-based iPhone ad impressions to determine the percentage of iPhone users in each state.

Each of the above listed states, along with many states in New England, saw between 55 and 65 percent of smartphone traffic coming from iPhones. Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan saw the lowest amount of traffic coming from iPhones, at 40 to 44 percent. New Mexico was the state with the lowest iPhone usage.

According to Chitika, iPhone usage rates did not correlate to geography or raw population figures, but there was some relationship to both population density and education level. A higher median income was also associated with iPhone usage, but that could be a result of education level, as those two variables go hand in hand. In states with higher education levels and denser populations, iPhone usage tended to be higher.

In a similar study conducted in 2011, Montana was one of the few states where iPhone usage outpaced Android usage. In many states the iPhone is not dominant, but the two usage maps provide an interesting look at how iPhone adoption has grown by state over the past four years. Many states where BlackBerry dominated, for example, are now seeing high iPhone usage.

Chitika's study is not the first to correlate iPhone usage with higher education and income levels. Several other studies have also suggested that iPhone owners are, on average, wealthier and higher educated than other smartphone owners.

Southern states like Mississippi do often have a higher number of wealthy families: descendants of those who used to or still own big plantations. Mississippi has fairly decent education as well. It's organized fairly well and they have good teachers there.

The Truth is Out There

Sorry, I have a real problem with that survey. It does not include the entire United States, left out were the territories. Those people are US citizens and deserve to be counted. Over the years we stole, finagled, expropriated or conquered those fine, but poorly understood lands. there 15 territories, five of which are inhabited: Puerto Rico, Guam, Northern Marianas, U. S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa. There are 10 largely uninhabited Territories; Palmyra Atoll, Baker Island, Howland Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Wake Island, Midway Islands, Navassa Island and Serranilla Bank. However, on the uninhabited islands the population fluctuates, depending on our guano mining activities, nuke testing and super secret US bases where we hide the Aliens, Elvis and the head of Walt Disney. I'm willing to bet u my cat squeak that aliens and Elvis prefer the iPhone. Just wanted to set the record straight:eek:

When you live in an area where you have to purchase cars and equipment that could mean your life or death your always going to spend a little more on a phone that is extremely reliable and not subject to easy breakage and virus resilient.
I'm sorry. I showed this comment to my 9 year old. She laughed too. I told her you were just kidding.;):D

On topic: There seems to be no relevant conclusion to be gained. The highest iPhone penetration is in states with high and low income, high and low population, and high and low education levels. So basically it's saying some states have higher iPhone usage than others. Uh, okay.

... Both of which have low population/population density. iPhone has 100% popularity in my house . I think the stats here aren't all that informative...

The map is zoomable. Just keep zooming in until you can see your house - it'll be very dark green... almost black.
