Apple Asks Developers for OS X Lion Mac App Store Submissions

macappstore
Apple has started soliciting developers to submit Mac App Store submissions for OS X Lion. In an email sent out to developers this evening, Apple says that OS X Lion will "soon be available to millions of Mac users around the world." They are asking developers to submit their OS X Lion compatible applications so they can be on the Mac App Store when Lion ships "this month".

The request for OS X Lion specific applications seems a bit late for the rumored release this week. Last year, Apple began accepting iOS 4 apps into the App Store 11 days ahead of iOS 4's public release. While App Store approvals typically run about a week, Apple has been known to prioritize new release submissions, so the timeframe for OS X Lion App approvals could be much shorter.

OS X Lion is known to be on track for release sometime in July. Lion, itself, will be an App Store only release.

Shouldn't Apple make any kind of announcement by now if they intend to release it on Thursday, July 14?

We know and most of us are respecting the NDA.

Oh please, drop the elitism. You could've answered his question without breaking NDA, simply by citing stuff Apple has shown at WWDC or at the Back to the Mac event.

Fullscreen apps and versions are 2 prominent examples that have been publicly displayed where developers will need to rewrite some parts of their applications and submit them in time to get support on launch day.

No.

If Apple is going to release it on Thursday, the announcement from Apple will occur on Thursday.

The time compression of everything from OS releases to app store submissions to hardware updates to promotional activities is interesting.

Having worked with Apple behind the scenes, they are still very procedural and bureaucratic, but the public face is approaching some future real-time feedback loop.

I'm interested in knowing what you mean by "future real-time feedback loop."

What could be the advantage of Friday releases?

No lost productivity from messing around with it over the weekend? :)

Previous OS X release dates:

10.1 September 25, 2001
10.2 August 23, 2002
10.3 October 24, 2003
10.4 April 29, 2005
10.5 October 26, 2007
10.6 August 28, 2009

Notice anything?

Of course the argument could be that being download only Lion will shave some time off and come out earlier in the month of release... but personally I think it's going to be at the (ahem)tail-end of the month, and this news only makes me think that even more. I'm guessing in the twenty-somethings anyway.
